Good Retail Store Display Designs, create free sales volume!

Your Display location is a critical decision

Where you put your Key Product merchandising displays should be carefully planned. One of the most common display mistakes made by small, specialty retail stores, is to concentrate their most impressive and visible displays at or near the store entrance. As tempting as it may be to try and impress your customers as they walk in to your store, you could actually be losing sales! Retail store lease space is expensive, so making each square foot profitable, must be your goal.

Creating a First Impression with your display design layout

Although you can't afford to waste space, overcrowding your merchandising displays will create an impression of clutter, disarray and merchandising confusion. Unless you're a Dollar Store, that's not a first impression you can afford.

Retail store displays must be sized proportionately (to your store space). Many retailers are too quick to accept those free display racks from their wholesaler. Those free merchandising displays were designed to focus and feature their products (not your store). Unless they fit the space you design for them, don't use them! Consumers are sophisticated enough to recognize Free Stuff display racking, when it doesn't fit into and enhance, your overall store space design.

Merchandising display shelving - design and materials

Display shelving designs are as varied as your imagination will allow. You can purchase display shelving systems that are prefabricated in metal, wood products or even plastic. Your choices are almost endless. However, choosing the right display shelving will depend on a number of considerations:

The Size and Weight of the products on display

Trying to put heavy merchandise on shelving that is only designed for light items, will create a poor first impression. At an extreme, it could even be dangerous for your customers. Trying to employ shelving units that were designed for residential use should probably be avoided. Those economy shelving units from IKEA were not built for the rigors of commercial use. They may appear to be cheaper than custom built display shelving, until you consider economy of scale factors. If your store design requires 25 or 30 individual units (@$ 200 ea.), you can probably save money by having them custom fabricated. Matching the look and finish of the IKEA units, for the rest of your store millwork could be difficult as well.

Displays of books (and similar heavy items) should go on shelving that is at least 3/4" thick and does not exceed 32" of shelf length. Since most commercial display shelving will need to be adjustable, supporting the shelf on the ends, will require a strong and rigid material.

The Quality or Retail Value of the products on display

Big ticket merchandise, needs to be effectively displayed. If you can impress your customer with the quality of your merchandise, don't loose them with a cheap display stand. If the store doesn't think the merchandise is valuable enough to display it well, why should the customer? If this will be your main source of sales revenue, you will probably want to use the largest portion of your display budget on effectively displaying this merchandise.

It is not difficult to achieve a balance between cost and appearance if you space plan effectively.

The Security Requirements of the merchandise display

Although you could put all of your merchandise behind bars to prevent shop-lifting and other losses, you might not sell a lot of merchandise either. Achieving a good balance between security and an attractive display design isn't always easy. Glass display shelving units can be relatively expensive. They also have safety requirements that MUST be followed. The safety of your customers should be considered in the placement of any glass display shelving. High traffic isles and other areas are best served by a more stable and substantial display shelving material.

We have designed custom millwork for several hundred retail store projects. No two are exactly the same. Specialty retailing means more than special products. It also means that your overall store presentation is special to your customer.
